FRANCHISE SPOTLIGHT

  • Ivybrook Academy is a half-day pre-school that was created by a public school teacher who was looking to balance quality of life with owning a business. As a highly involved mom of two very young children, she sought a means of achieving financial freedom that would also allow her more time with her kids.

  • Steady daytime hours of operation – 8:15 to 4:30

    • Two, 3.75 hour sessions per day with different students in both sessions

  • Focused on education, not daycare

  • No transportation/busing of children

  • No lunches served

  • Maximum of 15 employees

  • Most of their families have a stay-at-home parent or a nanny and choose Ivybrook for the educational element

  • ~6,000 sq. feet facility

  • Professional teachers with 4-year teaching degrees

  • Progressive blended curriculum based on Reggio Emilia and Montessori methods

  • The facility is closed approximately 32 work days per year, allowing for an extra 6 weeks off for owners

  • When summer hours are involved, the facility closes by noon

  • Investment Range: $461k - $798k

  • Average Franchisee EBITDA: $216k

Tim’s Take:

Ivybrook is a very intriguing player in the children’s education/preschool space. From an hours perspective it is a significant improvement over your standard daycare that is open from 7am-6pm. That’s an extra 3 hours per day of time savings for owners to spend time with their families and do other things.

Ivybrook still had a strong item 19 earnings claim in this year’s FDD, but it was not as impressive as what it had shown the prior year (screenshot below). Why did their numbers decline in 2023? From what I can tell they had a lot of new franchisees cross over the 24-months open mark. These franchisees were likely negatively impacted by Covid and haven’t seen the same growth as the prior franchisees given they launched during a challenging time. I’m optimistic that these numbers will improve next year. If I were looking at the preschool/daycare space, Ivybrook would still be at the top of my list given the reasonable total investment and family-friendly hours.
